College of the Canyons student bitten by possible rabid bat in Valencia

VALENCIA, Calif. (KABC) -- A College of the Canyons student claims he was bitten by a possibly rabid bat while on campus.

Around 7 p.m. Tuesday, the student was walking near the tennis courts at the Valencia campus when he was bit.

School officials said they could not independently confirm the attack, but that the student received medical attention off campus. They added that the reports showed he was getting treatment for rabies exposure.

The Santa Clarita Valley is home to several species of bats. According to a school notice, bats seen flying during the day or that encounter humans and pets are more likely to be rabid. About 10 to 15 percent of those bats test positive for rabies in Los Angeles County.
