New test could measure severity of concussions
Experts often use sophisticated equipment to measure the severity of a concussion, but a simple, new test uses items a doctor could carry in his pocket.

Experts often use sophisticated equipment to measure the severity of a concussion, but a simple, new test uses items a doctor could carry in his pocket.

Vestibular Ocular Motor Screening uses a metronome and a popsicle stick with a small sticker. Therapists ask patients to move their heads and focus their eyes on the image. Using a tape measure, they check convergence, the point near the eyes where vision gets blurry.

Researchers said the test is accurate when patients are evaluated in a doctor's office between one day and one week after a head injury.

The test has not been used to check for concussions immediately after impact, so it's unclear if the test could be used on the sidelines.
