LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- "Dancing With The Stars" five-time champion Derek Hough has conquered the dance floor since he was 11 years old. But he set his sights on a new challenge this year and is "Taking the Lead" in the publishing world.
Hough has written a memoir that looks at the ups and downs he's endured throughout his 29 years, and how they have helped shape him into a successful adult.
"The reason why I call the book 'Lessons from a Life in Motion' is because those lessons are meant to be learned, and re-learned," Hough said. "These lessons are meant to be re-applied and re-embodied."
Hough says he felt the only way to do this book was to offer his complete honesty. And that meant sometimes looking back at more painful moments of his youth, including when he was bullied.
"It was a learning experience to look back at that," said Hough. "I definitely don't want to look at myself as a victim but more as a witness to what was going on with them."
The Emmy-winning choreographer hopes to inspire readers to embrace whatever their own passions may be. And do it now!
"If you feel like you have to wait until you're ready, you're never going to do it," he said. "So throw yourself into things and trust you'll find a way."
