El Nino storms wash away sand, reveal shipwreck at Coronado Beach

CORONADO, Calif. (KABC) -- People in Coronado Beach are getting a glimpse of history, thanks to recent El Nino storms that unveiled a shipwreck underneath the sand.

The storms have washed away a lot of sand, and the low tide has revealed the top of what historians say is the SS Monte Carlo. The vessel was a casino ship which was anchored offshore in international waters.

It came loose from its anchor during a storm in 1936 and washed ashore. It was never salvaged and was left to sink into the sand.

Lifeguards have posted warning signs on Coronado Beach to keep people from getting hurt. It's rusty and not something you'd want to be swept into by a wave.
