John Chiang discusses his bid for California governor on Newsmakers

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- California State Treasurer John Chiang stopped by Eyewitness Newsmakers to discuss his current bid for governor.

Chiang declared early that he was running for governor in 2018 with his competition being current Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom. He served two terms as state controller and was elected treasurer two years ago.

Now, the state's banker and chief numbers cruncher thinks he has what it takes to run California.

On the program, he describes how he's modernized his office, made it more transparent and opened a "DebtWatch" website where anyone can be a citizen watchdog on how the state is spending taxpayer money.

Chiang said he supports Proposition 55, which extends tax increases for people earning more than $250,000 a year.
