Jurupa Valley HS students lose privileges for excessive fighting

JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- With just days to go in the school year, students at Jurupa Valley High School are losing some of their privileges because of excessive fighting on campus.

Cellphone video from sophomore Kameron Weston captured one of the fights at the school that led to a lunchtime lockdown for all 1,600 students.

"Right now, we were on kind of like a lunch lock down kind of thing that everyone had to stay in their fourth periods, and we were dismissed by class to get our lunches," said student Victoria Hernandez.

The fight between two girls happened Monday and was followed by two other campus brawls on Tuesday and Wednesday.

After the series of violent events, Jurupa Unified School District officials took action and canceled outdoor lunches.

"Our first and foremost responsibility is the safety of students and the staff at the district, so that's what we are taking care of," said Superintendent Elliott Duchon.

At least three students, all sophomores at the school, have been arrested for fighting, but it's the seniors who said they are paying the price.

"I only have two more days of lunch left and not being able to have lunch with my friends...it saddens me," Hernandez said.

The booster club activity also canceled for students' own safety as school administrators hoped to avoid more incidents.

School officials said there were no plans of canceling graduation.
