LAPD officer in unmarked car fired upon; suspect at large

LEIMART PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An undercover Los Angeles police officer conducting surveillance in Leimert Park was fired upon multiple times Tuesday morning but was not hurt, police said.

According to authorities, officers in plain clothes were in the area of Coliseum Street and Edgehill Drive.

Around 6:30 a.m., a female officer who was parked in an unmarked vehicle was shot at approximately five times by a suspect or suspects driving by in a car, possibly a silver Prius. Police said no officers returned fire.

Authorities said the officer was not injured.

"Anytime an officer is fired upon and they're not injured and no one's hurt, you know, we're very thankful for that," said LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery.

A search was underway for the suspect(s).

"We're still very, very concerned because now we have a dangerous individual out there who has fired upon an LAPD officer," Montgomery said.

According to police, the undercover officer was doing crime suppression in the area. Investigators did not elaborate further on what that entails.

Police said if anyone in the area saw something, they can provide information to detectives anonymously.

Police said this area has seen an uptick in crime recently.

"There are many, many ways in which you can provide helpful assistance in an incident like this and make your community safer. Be a part of it. Help us solve the issues that are plaguing the community," Montgomery said.
