Fog causes delays, cancellations and flight diversions at LAX

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Federal Aviation Administration officials issued a ground stop at Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday evening due to heavy fog, causing delays, cancellations and flight diversions.

The FAA issued the ground stoppage at 7 p.m. Wednesday and lifted it at 1 a.m. Thursday, airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles said. It affected flights from the western United States and northern Mexico.

There were 57 delayed and 13 canceled arriving flights out of 250 scheduled arrivals during the six-hour ground stoppage, Castles said. There were also 31 delayed and 23 canceled departing flights out of nearly 200 scheduled departures.

Of the 57 delayed arrivals, 28 were diverted to Ontario International Airport, Castles said. And of those 28 flights, 10 continued onto LAX while the passengers on the 18 other flights deplaned and were being bused to LAX.

Two flights intended for John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana were also diverted to Ontario.

There was residual delays, but operations are reported to be back to normal at LAX. Passengers and people picking up travelers were still urged to check with airlines before coming to the airport.
