What is Measure ER? LA County voters to decide on sales tax hike

Voters in Los Angeles County are deciding on Measure ER.

It asks for a half-cent sales tax increase for healthcare and other essential services.

L.A. County voters will decide on Measure ER -- a proposed half-cent sales tax increase that would last five years. While tax increases aren't popular, supporters say this one is a lifeline to healthcare services.

This ballot measure follows the loss of six L.A. County public health clinics due to federal government cuts.

If approved, the tax would last five years and generate around $1 billion a year.

Election security ramped up across SoCal

"Don't do it."

That's what Los Angeles Country Sheriff Robert Luna has to say to anyone who's considering tampering with the election.

The L.A. County Registrar-Recorder's Office says it's investigating two separate incidents over the weekend.

"Don't do it." That's what Los Angeles Country Sheriff Robert Luna has to say to anyone who's considering tampering with the election.

A handful of ballots were found burned in a downtown L.A. drop box, and a vote center in Long Beach was vandalized.

"There are going to be significant consequences and our D.A., I assure everyone out there, we will be looking for additional charges as it relates to anything election related," the sheriff said.

Long Beach police say they don't believe the center was targeted because it's a vote center.

As for the ballots burned, it's unclear how many there were but the Registrar says you'd be contacted if your ballot was impacted.

One of the most watched races in the primary will decide which two candidates will face off for job of Los Angeles mayor in the November general election.

While making her final push Monday, Bass told Eyewitness News she's not concerned about being shut out of the November runoff.

"I don't. There are lots and lots of polls out there. I do not have concern. I would never, ever be cavalier. I would never just be presumptuous. But I don't know that any candidate is. But, on the other hand, I think I will be fine," Bass said.
