What is Measure ER? LA County voters to decide on sales tax hike

Voters in Los Angeles County are deciding on Measure ER.

It asks for a half-cent sales tax increase for healthcare and other essential services.

L.A. County voters will decide on Measure ER -- a proposed half-cent sales tax increase that would last five years. While tax increases aren't popular, supporters say this one is a lifeline to healthcare services.

This ballot measure follows the loss of six L.A. County public health clinics due to federal government cuts.

If approved, the tax would last five years and generate around $1 billion a year.

All eyes on race for California governor

Some big races are at stake in Tuesday's election, including the primary to see which two candidates for California governor will make it to the November general election.

Voters will choose from an extensive field of candidates hoping to replace termed-out Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom. The top two finishers advance to the November runoff. About 60 candidates were on the ballot, most of them largely unknown to the state's roughly 23 million voters.

Some big races are at stake in Tuesday's election, including the primary to see which two candidates for California governor will make it to the November general election.

The three frontrunners are Xavier Becerra, former state attorney general and U.S. health secretary, Tom Steyer, a billionaire climate activist, and conservative commentator Steve Hilton.

Katie Porter, a former member of Congress, Matt Mahan, the mayor of San Jose, and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, a Republican, are also still in the race.
