CAMARILLO, Calif. -- Hundreds of residents were forced to flee a fast-moving wildfire, called the Mountain Fire, in Ventura County that has already damaged multiple homes. Chris Cristi in AIR7 estimated that 40-50 homes have burned from what he could see.

The out-of-control wildfire broke out near the 7900 block of Balcom Canyon Road and Bradley Road at approximately 9:30 a.m. The fire department described the incident as a two-alarm fire that burned 250 acres, but it quickly exploded and is now more than 10,000 acres.

The fire crossed Highway 118 and is now threatening the Camarillo Heights area.

Schools canceled, campuses evacuated due to Mountain Fire in Moorpark

The fast-moving Mountain Fire in the Moorpark area triggered several schools to evacuate their campuses and cancel classes on Wednesday.

Chaparral Middle School-Moorpark, Campus Canyon College Preparatory Academy and High School at Moorpark College campuses were evacuated after SEC deactivated power due to high winds. Moorpark Unified School District officials said students are safe, but classes at the schools were canceled due to the power outage and fire-related evacuations.

Pleasant Valley School District also announced that Camarillo Heights campus was evacuated, and that remaining students were expected to be transported to Monte Vista via bus.

The district said child care services will be suspended earlier at 4:30 p.m., and that children will need to be picked up at that time due to staffing shortages and fire-related evacuation orders.
