LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was rushed to a local hospital after being shot during a confrontation with a suspect in North Long Beach on Monday. The suspect has died.
The shooting happened in the area of Long Beach Boulevard and 69th Street at about 10 a.m. Authorities say the suspect -- a man in his early 20s -- was riding a bicycle when deputies stopped him. There was a struggle and the suspect started running.
"He ran from the bike, deputies followed him, they caught up with him, a second struggle ensued. During that struggle, the suspect tried to remove one of our deputies' handguns. He was also armed with his own firearm," said Lt. Steve Jauch with the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.
At some point, both deputies opened fire on the suspect. He died at the scene. The suspect's name has not been released.
The injured deputy was in stable condition after undergoing surgery at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood for a gunshot wound to the stomach. He has been with the department since 2007.
Several streets in the area were closed due to the investigation.
