DURHAM -- Durham police have a 14-year-old boy in custody after they say he stole a car and took the vehicle's owner for a wild ride.
It started around 7 a.m. Wednesday when the car owner started the brand new vehicle to let it warm up outside his home in the 800 block of North Duke Street.
That's when police say the teen jumped in and tried to drive off. In an attempt to stop the theft, the car's owner jumped onto the back of the vehicle.
"I ran out of my apartment and I saw the guy take off to the parking lot to my car. And I immediately grabbed onto the spoiler and he dragged me from 810 North Duke Street all the way here," said the man.
The man, who asked not to be identified, said he clung to the back of the car for about nine blocks before the teen crashed into a pickup truck. The man said his shoes and pants were all scratched up.
Emergency workers were called to treat the dazed owner, but he was just a little banged up. Police gave him a ride home.
Police said the teen, who was not identified because of his age, will face charges.
