CORRECTION: Per the Associated Press, we reported that the picture above was a booking photo of Sonya Katrina Spoon. The picture is actually her driver's license photo.

Sonya Katrina Spoon, 24, of Cheverly, Maryland, admitted she murdered her two young children, said police.

A 911 call was placed regarding two unconscious children suffering respiratory distress in the early morning hours. Major Cesar Pacheco of Prince George County Police told ABC2 that while on the scene, responding officers found evidence of foul play and the children's mother was detained.

"There were bags that were placed over the children's heads," said Pacheco.

Spoons' children, 1-year-old Ayden Soon and his sister, 3-year-old Kayla Thompson were both rushed to the local Children's Hospital by paramedics, but died within hours of the 911 call.

While in custody, Spoon admitted to police that she had suffocated her children, though investigators said they have not yet established an official cause of death.

The 911 call was placed by a family member of Spoon, who, along with her two children, had been living with her parents for a few months.

Prince George County Police are still investigating Spoon's motives for killing her children, especially when the same mother routinely posted loving photos of her children online. Prince George Police, however, have become aware that the neighboring Cheverly Police Department had visited the Spoon home a week earlier.

"We're aware of a call about a week ago where the Cheverly Police Department responded to that address, and it's our understanding that they brought the mother and now our suspect, Sonya Spoon, into a medical facility for a psychiatric evaluation," Bill Alexander of the Prince George's County Police Department told ABC2.

Prince George County Police are not yet aware of the circumstances that lead Cheverly Police to bring Spoon to the medical facility.

"This is a really tough case to think about---two young kids sleeping in their home murdered by their own mother... really, really tough," said Alexander.
