SAN DIEGO (KABC) -- Federal authorities seized more than 15 tons of marijuana at the Otay Mesa border crossing south of San Diego Thursday.

Customs agents say a 46-year-old truck driver tried to cross into California with 1,200 packages of marijuana valued at nearly $19 million.

The truck-trailer was stacked from floor to ceiling with plastic-wrapped packages of marijuana. It was also carrying mattresses and cushions.

The driver, a Mexican citizen with a valid border crossing card, has been turned over to customs agents. His border crossing card has been canceled.
