What we know about the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Fourteen people were killed and 17 were injured Wednesday during a mass shooting incident at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino. Here's what we know about the center:
The Inland Regional Center is a nonprofit, community-based agency that offers support and services for individuals with developmental disabilities living in San Bernardino and Riverside counties in Southern California, according to its website. Eyewitnesses in the area have told KABC that several hundred people work at the facility.
The president and CEO of the social services center, Maybeth Feild, said the focus was on a building that houses at least 25 employees as well as a library and conference center, according to the Associated Press. The conference center is sometimes rented to outside agencies for events. The San Bernardino Health Department was having as holiday party at the conference center at the time of the shooting, according to Keith Nelson, Vice President of the Inland Board of Trustees.
The facility is located in San Bernardino, considered part of the Inland Empire area of Southern California, approximately 60 miles east of Los Angeles.
The largest of the regional centers in California, the IRC says its core values of "independence, inclusion and empowerment are the foundation that drives all staff in interactions, provisions of services, and program planning processes."
The facility's website was down Wednesday afternoon, but a cached version of the site reveals that upcoming events include a holiday boutique and winter dance.
