Man dies in police custody following Ontario crash

ONTARIO, Calif. (KABC) -- Ontario Police Department officials on Friday were investigating the death of a man who died in police custody after crashing in Ontario.

Officers responded to a solo-vehicle crash at 1:17 a.m. near Archibald Avenue, south of Ontario Ranch Road, early Wednesday. The driver, identified as 28-year-old Kyle Briones, apparently crashed with a curb and a sign, police said in a press release.

The initial responding officer found Briones still seated behind the wheel, unconscious and bleeding from the mouth. Officers assisted the Ontario man in getting out of the smoking car.

Officials said Briones showed signs of possible impairment as he staggered out of his car. When he became more coherent, officials said, he immediately became uncooperative and physically resisted officers.

Police said he was given several instructions to cooperate but he failed to comply with the officers' requests before they were finally able to handcuff him.

Once handcuffed, Briones lost consciousness a second time. Briones was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was performed Thursday morning by the San Bernardino County Coroner's Office, and it was discovered that Briones had a previously existing medical condition.

The San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office was advised of the incident and will review the case, the press release stated.

The officers involved were placed on routine, paid administrative leave, which is normal under department practices.

Officials said the incident was captured on camera and the videos were being reviewed by investigators.
