LAKE LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- In just weeks, a high-profile sex offender known as the "Pillowcase Rapist" is expected to be released, then moved into a neighborhood off Avenue R and 203rd Street in Lake Los Angeles. Local residents are outraged.
Some Lake Los Angeles residents are getting more nervous knowing serial rapist Christopher Hubbart, 63, is due to be released from a mental institution in less than two weeks. Per a judge's order, he will then move into a house on the 20300 block of East Avenue R.
Within the last two weeks workers have been preparing the home for Hubbart's arrival. They have put in a propane tank. Gardeners have been doing yard work and phone lines have been put in.
Around town some residents are taking self-defense classes.
Hubbart sexually assaulted at least 40 women in the 1970s and 1980s. Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey has been at the forefront of trying to prevent Hubbart from being released into the community of Lake Los Angeles.
Residents attended hearings and wrote numerous letters to a Santa Clara County judge pleading to keep Hubbart behind bars.
Hubbart will wear a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week GPS monitor on his ankle and will be accompanied by security people every time he goes out in public for the first six months to a year of his release. He will be transported to therapy sessions twice a week.
Despite all the safety measures, some residents remain very concerned.
People Eyewitness News talked to say the day Hubbart moves in, they will make sure he knows he is not welcomed.
"They're going to have a crowd out front. He'll be lucky to make it in the door," said Lake Los Angeles resident Brad Squires.
Hubbart is expected to be released on or before July 7.
