RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (KABC) -- A 3-month-old baby girl was killed in a freak accident outside a fast food restaurant in Rancho Cucamonga on Sunday after she slipped out of her mother's hands and was run over by a rolling vehicle, authorities said.
The incident occurred in the 11200 block of 4th Street at about 11:46 a.m.
The victim's family was using a borrowed vehicle and was unfamiliar with its operation, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
The baby's 31-year-old mother was getting her daughter and 3-year-old son out of the car, which she believed she had turned off, when it began rolling backward. As she tried to apply the brakes, she lost hold of her daughter, who then fell and was struck by the vehicle as it rolled back, sheriff's deputies said.
The mother stopped the vehicle and rushed over to her daughter. She was transported to San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland, where she was pronounced dead.
The baby's father was placing an order inside of the restaurant at the time of the incident. Sheriff's deputies say the mother was extremely upset but remained cooperative with investigators.
Anyone with additional information or who may have witnessed the collision was asked to contact Deputy Thomas Lee or Sgt. Phill Dupper at (909) 477-2800 or (909) 477-2817.
