SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) -- A man suspected of driving under the influence was arrested following a three-vehicle pileup that left an 18-year-old man dead and five others hospitalized in Santa Ana Saturday night, police said.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Bristol Street and Central Avenue at 9:23 p.m. According to police, Herbert Granados Calderon, 23, of Santa Ana, was driving a Lexus when he ran a red light and broadsided a Honda. The force of the collision caused the Honda to collide with a Chevrolet pickup truck.
According to the coroner, 18-year-old Roberto Rubio, of Santa Ana, was pronounced dead at the scene. Rubio was a passenger in the Honda. According to friends, they had just picked him up and were on their way to a party when the crash occurred.
Five other people were taken to local hospitals. Three suffered serious trauma and two sustained minor injuries.
One of the victims had to be cut from the wreckage, said Capt. Ben Gonzales of the Orange County Fire Authority.
Calderon was arrested for DUI. Police say Calderon was driving on a suspended license. His license had previously been suspended for a prior DUI conviction.
Rubio was remembered as an outgoing person with a big heart. A memorial continued to grow at the scene Sunday afternoon.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision was urged to contact Investigator Hadley from the Santa Ana Police Department Collision Investigation Unit at (714) 245-8216.
