49ers linebacker Aldon Smith arrested at LAX over bomb threat

LOS ANGELES INT'L AIRPORT (KABC) -- San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested after belligerently making a bomb threat at Los Angeles International Airport Sunday.

LAX police say Smith was selected for secondary screening while going through Terminal 1 around 2 p.m.

At that time, he became belligerent and uncooperative with the TSA agent. He allegedly made a comment indicating that he was in possession of a bomb before proceeding towards the gate area, according to LAPD Sgt. Karla Ortiz.

He was immediately taken into custody by airport police and transported to LAPD-Pacific division where he was booked for false report of a bomb threat. He was released after posting $20,000 bail.

This is not Smith's first run in with the law. Smith was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and marijuana possession in San Jose on Sept. 20, 2013. He checked himself into rehab following his arrest and left the team to deal with his personal issues.

He also faces three felony counts of illegal possession of an automatic weapon stemming from a party at his home in June 2012.

San Francisco 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke released the following statement Sunday: "We are disappointed to learn of the incident today involving Aldon Smith. As this is a pending legal matter and we are still gathering the pertinent facts, we will have no further comment."
