STUDIO CITY, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Residents in a Studio City neighborhood were shaken out of bed by an overnight water-main break that spewed water all over their homes.

The 8-inch pipe ruptured around 2 a.m. and caused a big mess at Halkirk Street and Goodland Place.

Residents say they heard rumbling from the ground and felt their homes shaking like an earthquake.

"Then all of a sudden it sounded like this hail, things were hitting the house, and it was really loud and then it was raining," said one resident.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said the rupture left at least 50 homes without water. It was expected to take hours to restore, officials said.

The cause of the water-main break remains under investigation.
