Sylmar condo fire injures firefighter, displaces residents
SYLMAR, Calif. (KABC) -- A firefighter was injured and nine people were displaced after a fire broke out at a condominium complex in Sylmar.
About 85 Los Angeles firefighters responded to a greater alarm fire shortly before 2 a.m. in the 14300 block of Foothill Boulevard. Three of the four units in the 4,684 square-foot complex were burned, which spread to the attic and ceilings. The fire was knocked down at about 2:45 a.m.
Los Angeles City Fire Capt. Jaime Moore said eight adults and one child were awakened by fire alarms and escaped their homes safely.
"We saved the lives of the people inside because of the smoke alarms," Moore said.
The fourth unit in the condominium complex was spared.
"I'm just glad it didn't get to us," said Alana Rodriguez, whose home remained safe.
A firefighter received a minor facial injury and was transported to a local hospital, and a resident received a minor burn on his leg trying to put out the grease fire.
The American Red Cross is assisting the residents who were displaced.
Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire. It was unclear if arson was involved.
