SOUTH GATE, Calif. (KABC) -- Authorities are asking for the public's help to catch two suspects who shot and killed a repo driver in South Gate. The incident was caught on surveillance video.
Tow truck driver Steven Lawson was murdered on July 27 just before 4:00 a.m. He had picked up a car in Compton that morning and was towing it without knowing the female owner of the vehicle was asleep in the back seat.
They say friends of the woman got in multiple cars and chased Lawson's tow truck. At one point, as surveillance video shows, one of the suspects got out of the car and shot at Lawson as he drove through a 7-Eleven parking lot.
As the chase continued into South Gate, detectives say Lawson struck a vehicle unrelated to the incident and was forced to get out of his tow truck.
"His vehicle was rendered inoperable. Mr. Lawson then exited his vehicle and was cruelly gunned down," said Lt. Dave Dolson with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
The two suspects have been identified as Davion Keeshawn Harrison and Derell "DJ" Clark Jr.
"You've taken away someone that is so dear to our hearts. My mother is grieving to the point now her whole demeanor has changed," Mona Lawson, the victim's sister, said at a press conference on Wednesday. "Please if you know these young men, let the South Gate Police Department know, so we can have some form of justice."
Detectives have one suspect in custody whom they believe was involved in the shooting. In addition to Harrison and Clark, investigators are on the hunt for multiple other suspects connected to the shooting and chase.
The city of South Gate is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects. Anyone with information was asked to call Los Angeles Regional Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
