RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (KABC) -- What began as a routine pep rally at Alta Loma High School turned into an unforgettable moment for American Sign Language teacher Danyel Smith.

In front of a cheering crowd, Smith was named a Milken Educator Award recipient, an honor recognizing outstanding teachers nationwide. The surprise announcement also came with a $25,000 cash prize.

For the past 13 years, Smith has taught American Sign Language, inspiring students every step of the way.

"My favorite part of the job is working with students. I love teacher ASL. I have only taught American Sign Language," said Smith.

Smith is one of 45 educators nationwide selected for the award, created by philanthropist Lowell Milken.

"We are recognizing the importance of what she does and how she inspires so many students to participate." Milken said.

Her students say the honor is well deserved.

"Her advice, her teaching skills everything she puts into the classroom is full of love and care and careful consideration and we are far the best in the ASL community," said Junior, Sabrina Tepper.

Smith now joins an elite network of more than 3,000 Milken Educators across the country.
