Death Valley topples heat record set 100 years ago

DEATH VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- Death Valley is living up to its name this summer. The region just had its hottest July ever recorded, beating a record set 100 years ago.

Last month, desert temperatures reached their hottest ever at a scorching average of 107.4 degrees.

That includes nighttime temperatures, searing at an average of 95 degrees.

The July temps toppled the previous record set in 1917, which was 107.2 degrees.
