LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The first heat wave of the summer arrives in Southern California this week, bringing triple-digit heat to many areas.
Things will start heating up on Tuesday as a ridge of high pressure coming in from Arizona starts drifting our direction. Temperatures will rise to the 90s and triple-digits for many areas when the heat wave peaks on Wednesday and Thursday.
The area of high pressure will sit right over SoCal on Wednesday and Thursday, and that sinking air compresses, making temperatures hotter and hotter.
An Extreme Heat Warning has been issued from Wednesday at 10 a.m. through Thursday at 8 p.m. in the area from Palm Springs to Blythe. The Inland Empire is under a heat advisory during the same time period.
Relief won't arrive until Friday, when temperatures begin to dip back down as the pressure weakens and the sea breeze moves back in heading into the weekend. There's already another heat wave in the forecast for next week.
Los Angeles and Orange counties Tuesday will see a high of 88 degrees and a low of 59. Once the heat wave arrives, highs are expected to hit 90 and 91 by Wednesday and Thursday.
The valleys and Inland Empire Tuesday will see a high of 97 degrees and a low of 59. By Wednesday and Thursday, the high is expected to climb to 100 degrees. Temperatures will come down by the weekend, but it will still be hot.
