Strong surf pounds Southland beaches, causes Ventura pier closure

VENTURA, Calif. (KABC) -- High surf and strong winds pounded the Southern California coast Friday, causing the closure of a pier and ocean water to pour onto nearby roads.

The Ventura Pier closed indefinitely in the morning as high surf slammed the coast and flooded nearby streets.

Around 7 a.m., Ventura police patrolling the area responded to the 600 block of Harbor Boulevard after receiving information about the damage.

Strong waves crashed onto the pier and caused wooden posts to break off the sides. Authorities were investigating the extent of the damage.

Residents were evacuated as waves crashed onto nearby homes.

Beaches along the coast, including Manhattan Beach, were empty Friday as strong surf and winds brought in massive waves.

Meanwhile, blustery conditions hit other beaches in the Southland following a high surf and wind advisory that is expected to remain throughout the weekend.

Highs tides and a possibility of coastal flooding were expected in the Seal Beach and Sunset Beach areas due to strong winds.

The surf was expected to get bigger throughout the day with sets of up to 10 to 15 feet. Beaches facing the northwest were said to be affected the most.

Swimmers and surfers with little experience were urged to stay away from the water as the weather conditions were expected to get more dangerous throughout the day.
