LAPD's Special Order 40 to get spotlight

LOS ANGELES The policy prohibits officers from questioning suspects about their immigration status.

The Los Angeles City Council announced it will hold a hearing in October.

Special Order 40 drew criticism earlier this year when Jamiel Shaw was killed by a reputed gang member who was also an illegal immigrant.

Councilman Dennis Zine then introduced a proposal to allow officers to check on a gang member's immigration status even if the person is not under arrest.
