LAPD increases patrols for Yom Kippur

LOS ANGELES The Jewish holiday began at sundown on Wednesday and marks the holiest and most somber day on the Jewish calendar.

Many Jews fast for 24 hours and spend much of their time in synagogues.

The holiday is known as the Day of Atonement. Jews ask God for forgiveness for the sins they may have committed over the past year.
