Program uses cell phones to unjam traffic

BERKELEY, Calif. Beginning Monday, the University of California, Berkeley will offer free downloads of a pilot program for phones with GPS.

The software will provide live traffic conditions, estimate commute times and suggest alternate routes to avoid congestion. Users can look at maps or listen to audio reports.

The software gathers traffic information from each activated phone. So the more cell phones to use it, the more accurate the traffic reports.
