Deputy shootout ends in death of suspect

HIGHLAND, Calif. Deputies responded to a residential robbery call at an apartment on the 25000 block of East 9th Street in Highland at about 6:30 p.m.

When deputies arrived, a witness told them that two men with handguns had entered an apartment occupied at the time by five adults and four children, ages 15, 5 and 6-month-old twins.

One of the suspects opened fire. They shot back, hitting him, and he later died at Loma Linda Medical Center. His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, but he has been identified as a 23-year-old from San Bernardino.

The other suspect ran off and also shot at deputies. They fired at him too, but didn't hit him.

Deputies found the suspect about an hour later and took him into custody. He was booked at the Central Detention Center for two counts of attempted murder of a police officer and residential robbery.

None of the officers was hurt.
