Thousands of teachers may be laid off

January 6, 2009 12:07:26 PM PST
Thousands of nonpermanent teachers in the L.A. Unified School District may be laid off because of the state's budget problems.According to the Daily News, the school board will discuss the issue next week.

District officials will first look at the nonpermanent teachers who have the least seniority.

The layoffs would save the district more than $137 million over one year, but the teachers' union says the cuts would hurt gains made in the classrooms.
