The station will serve Exposition Park, its museums and the university.
Councilman Bernard Parks, who represents the 8th District said the station will offer a convenient stop for the Coliseum and Sports Arena and anyone traveling to Staples Center.
The $862-million light rail project is scheduled to open in 2010 in order to ease travel times between downtown Los Angeles and the Westside.
It includes nine new stations along the Exposition right-of-way from downtown Los Angeles to Venice/Robertson in Culver City.
Parks said the station was not in the original plan, but makes sense because of its proximity to Exposition Park, its museum and one of the area's largest employers, with 10,000 workers at USC.
