Cool Kid has vision to help local seniors

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. "She ended up losing her vision. Right now she really is unable to do anything because she's lost so much vision," says David. "So when I go to the senior centers, I really want to take the point home that it is so important to get these tests."

David founded Vision for Vision at /*Santa Margarita Catholic High School*/. His mission is to bring both information and comfort to his audience.

"We try to make it less of a 'You have a disease' kind of thing and more of a 'Here's what we can do to help to maintain your vision' and 'Here's what we can do together to work on this,'" says David.

Vision for Vision started as a school club and has now grown to a nationally recognized nonprofit organization. Both David and his group have a very bright future.

"It's a club that really makes a difference. And I think that David's going to go on. He's going to be a brilliant physician and he's going to be a brilliant biotech engineer. He has that ability," says Teresa Villa, chairperson of the high-school science department.

Even as he teaches them, David still receives lessons from this older generation.

"Definitely nuggets of wisdom that you can receive from interacting with these senior citizens," says David. "Like my grandma, for instance, continues to be a great inspiration for me."

David is helping seniors see the beauty around them while keeping his eyes looking to the future. David Mittelstein is our /*Cool Kid*/.
