Report: Risky moves of O.C. firefighters

April 24, 2009 5:43:11 AM PDT
An official report on last year's Freeway Complex Fire suggests that some firefighters put themselves, and others, at risk by driving engines into the fire zone without telling superiors where they were going, or what they were doing. The 128-page report was released on Thursday.

Some of those firefighters were off duty. When they heard about the fires near Yorba Linda, according to the Orange County Fire Authority report, firefighters commandeered three engines to fight the flames.

Fire command did not know where those engines were for 12 hours.

The report also said the firefighters' moves hindered firefighting options when they failed to follow chain of command.

No lives were lost in the massive blaze.

There were 203 homes lost in the fire, but hundreds more were saved.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
