14-year-old arrested in fatal stabbing

April 27, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old Ojai boy at a party over the weekend. The Ventura County Sheriff's Department says the two boys were attending a party in Meiners Oaks when they got into an argument. Investigators say Seth Scarminach of Ojai was stabbed in front of a home in the 2400 block of Maricopa Highway shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday. Scarminach died at the scene.

The Sheriff's Department believes the 14-year-old suspect is affiliated with a local street gang. He was arrested at his home in Mira Monte at about 7 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities also arrested 21-year-old Gabriel Arellano of Oak View in connection with the murder, although Arellano is not suspected of stabbing Scarminach.

Arellano remains in custody on $110,000 bail. He was booked on suspicion of felony participation in a criminal street gang.

Ventura County Sheriff's investigators found evidence of alcohol and marijuana at the party. They say the party was not supervised.

The Ventura County Star contributed to this report.
