Nightmares may be sign of suicide risk

Researchers studied 82 men and women who were waiting for an emergency psychiatric evaluation before being admitted to a mental health hospital.

Patients' nightmares, insomnia, depression and suicidal tendencies were assessed through several questionnaires.

Researchers found that severe nightmares can be an acute warning sign and risk factor for suicide.

Health experts also noted that sleep complaints are now among the top ten warning signs of suicide by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The findings were presented at the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies.
