OAKLAND, Calif. --
The state of California and several local agencies are suing Target, accusing the company of illegally dumping hazardous waste.Attorney General Jerry Brown
, 20 district attorneys, and the Los Angeles city attorney jointly filed suit against Target Corp.
in Alameda County Superior Court Monday. They're accusing more than 200 Target stores of repeatedly disposing of aerosol containers, spray cleaners, bleaches, pesticides and other flammable and corrosive materials in landfills over the past eight years.
"Target has shown a willful disregard for California's hazardous waste laws," said Brown. "If successful, this lawsuit would force Target to comply with state laws governing the lawful handling and disposal of toxic and corrosive waste."
A spokeswoman for the company says Target has been following all state environmental laws.
In May, California reached an $8.65 million settlement with Kmart Corp. over similar allegations.
