Developer builds affordable homes in OC

SANTA ANA, Calif. Two new beautiful homes in the heart of Santa Ana are selling for less than $150,000 each. Now that's what you can call affordable housing. But how is it possible?

Vice president of RSI Development Steve Cauffman says thinking outside the typical housing box is the secret.

"Home building as an industry hasn't changed a whole lot since WWII. If you look at a job site there is a lot of down time on it where there is nothing happening on those homes," said Cauffman. "What we have done is merge two cultures -- manufacturing and home building. We have brought those two things together."

As a result RSI was able to cut costs and waste to build these homes that are between 1600 and 2000 square feet at their cost of only $85,000. And on top of that they partnered up with the City of Santa Ana to practically throw in the land.

"They provided the land for $1. Then they provided an offset on all of the fees. That is how the structure can bring a home in for $144,000," said Cauffman.

And one more thing. Both homes were built from the ground up to decoration in just 15 days. Incredible price, amazing construction time and partnership with the local community, RSI is hoping these showcase homes will create a trend all across America.

"We are talking to all of the officials here in Orange County and L.A. County to bring in public-private partnerships just like this," said Cauffman.

In the meantime these two homes will be released for a lottery sale at the end of the year. Buyers will have to follow some income guidelines and they must be residents of Santa Ana.
