Malibu triathlon garners celeb interest

MALIBU, Calif. They topped their goal of raising $1 million for the Pediatric Cancer Research Program at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

"We're truly excited and grateful for the opportunity to help the patients, families and researchers at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles who inspire us to swim, bike and run our hearts out every year," said Karen Murray, president of Nautica.

Competitors swam a half-mile in the Pacific Ocean, followed by an 18-mile bike ride along the Pacific Coast Highway, and a four-mile run on pavement and sand in Zuma and Trancas beaches.

Stuart Hayes, 30, of the United Kingdom, won the men's division, and Laura Bennett, a 34-year-old Australian living in Colorado, won the women's division.

Disney CEO Bob Iger was there to present a $250,000 check to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. He also competed in the event as a relay participant.

ABC7's own Phillip Palmer also participated in the event, along with several big Hollywood celebrities the likes of Terri Hatcher, Jennifer Lopez, Felicity Huffman, Mario Lopez and Matthew McConaughey.
