3 dead, 3 injured in Alabama school shooting

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle's Chief of Staff Trent Willis confirmed the shooter is female and was taken into custody Friday afternoon. The suspect was not identified. The Associated Press reported a second person was detained for questioning. It was reported on local TV stations that the female shooting suspect is a faculty member.

Willis confirmed three people were injured and taken to /*Huntsville Hospital*/. A hospital spokesman confirmed two victims were in critical condition and another in stable condition.

The shooting occurred Friday shortly after 4 p.m. in the /*University of Alabama-Huntsville*/ /*Shelby Center for Science and Technology*/, a science and engineering building. The shooting reportedly occurred during a biology faculty meeting.

The university's Twitter page reported all three fatalities were university faculty members. A university spokesman confirmed that, and that the wounded were two faculty members and a staff member.

The university's Web page declared the campus has been closed and all classes have been canceled for the night.

About 7,500 students attend the university.
