L.A. inmate home monitoring plan falls short

LOS ANGELES The plan was championed three years ago by Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca.

The idea was to allow some 2,000 offenders to serve their time at home with electronic monitoring.

Baca said it would free up space in jail for more serious offenders.

Three years later, there are only 135 offenders in the program, according to a Los Angeles Times report.

Officials say they miscalculated the number of nonviolent, low-security inmates who would be eligible for the program.
