Compton man arrested for niece's murder

COMPTON, Calif. According to family friends, the girl had been beaten and /*stabbed*/ to death, and they said it could have been prevented.

"This young man, if he would have got the proper help that he needed, this problem wouldn't have happened," said neighbor Bertrell Hall.

Police responded to a home on the 1100 block of East Peck Street after the 5-year-old's mother called 911 to report her daughter missing. When deputies arrived, they found the girl's body stuffed in a trash bag in a bedroom closet during a routine check of the home.

Julian Carter, the girl's uncle, has been arrested. Friends and neighbors say Carter has mental problems and has been committed several times. He lived with his niece, sister and parents.

"There were warning signs, like he needs treatment, like he needs some type of attention or something, but I don't know how they handle it, I just know that to me, it was a warning signs," said neighbor Talonce Hall.

Carter is being held without bail on one count of murder.
