Compton owes sheriff's dept. $6M for service

LOS ANGELES The /*Sheriff's*/ department provides about 112 deputies to police Compton, a city without its own police force.

Sheriff's spokesman /*Steve Whitmore*/ says Compton hasn't paid its bill since November. The city now owes $5.8 million, including $100,000 in late fees.

Compton recently voted to re-establish its own police force that was closed a decade ago under allegations of corruption.

Reasons are not yet known for why the payments have not been made or if anything will be done to retain Sheriff's services in Compton.
