Woman busted for cashing dead husband's checks

EAST LOS ANGELES The San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office Workers' Compensation Fraud Unit filed the counts against 52-year-old Brenda Lee Piper.

District Attorney investigators tracked Piper down in Los Angeles County and arrested her. She was booked into the L.A. County East L.A. Sheriff's Station jail.

Piper's husband, Derrick Morris, was murdered on March 10, 2009. Morris had been on disability leave from work and had been receiving checks from an insurance company.

Five disability checks were sent by the insurance company after Morris's death, as the company was not made aware of Morris's homicide.

Piper allegedly forged her husband's signature and cashed all five checks.

Piper was being held on $400,000 bail.
