Poor oversight of parking meters by the Los Angeles Department of Transportation is costing the city big money, according to a newly-released audit by City Controller Wendy Greuel.

The audit finds that the department is losing revenue because of incomplete monitoring of the city's estimated 36,000 parking meters.

The audit also blasts scanning devices designed to alert city workers to which meters need collection. Greuel said the handheld devices often don't work.

The department said it agrees with the findings and is implementing changes.
