LA Co. beaches attract biggest crowd of year

LOS ANGELES

According to Los Angeles County lifeguards, an estimated 1,183,000 people packed county beaches Saturday. Sunday's numbers added up to be about the same.

With the added fun in the sun, comes added danger. Officials said there have been 270 medical rescues including sting ray hits, bike path accidents and heat-related sicknesses. There were also 244 water rescues from people being caught off guard from uneven sand.

The marine layer made for a cool day at the beach as temps settled into the high 60s.

The Santa Monica Pier remained crowded late into Sunday night.
