Elle Macpherson's adviser fired due to phone hacking

November 22, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
A business adviser for Elle Macpherson said she was fired for leaking secrets when journalists were actually getting information by hacking into the model's phone.

During a British inquiry into media ethics Tuesday, Mary-Ellen Field described how she lost both her job for Macpherson and one at an advisory firm because of the unfounded suspicions.

The inquiry, which was set up by Prime Minister David Cameron, comes after the phone hacking scandal that brought down News of the World.

The tabloid was shut down by Rupert Murdoch in July amid allegations of widespread criminality.

Field said her relationship with Macpherson was once close, but it fell apart after the model's intimate secrets began appearing in the press in 2005.

Field said she was accused of being an alcoholic who blabbed to the press about her employer. She said she even went along with a recommendation to go to rehab because she wanted to keep her job.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
