64 pounds of cocaine discovered in port container

PORT OF LOS ANGELES

A panel was removed and inside 20 bricks of cocaine wrapped in plastic were discovered. CBP estimated the street value of the cocaine at $585,000.

The container came from El Salvador with stops in Guatemala and Mexico, according to CBP. It held a shipment of cantaloupe destined for California.

According to CBP, in fiscal year 2011, U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized nearly five million pounds of narcotics, a 20 percent increase from fiscal year 2010.
